Sedation Dentistry
We use advanced sedation dentistry to help you stay calm, relaxed, and comfortable during a wide range of treatments. Sedation reduces anxiety and makes procedures easier.
Sedation Options at Finger Lakes Dental
Dental sedation is a safe and effective way to help you feel calm, comfortable, and at ease during your dental treatment. Whether you experience anxiety, have a low pain threshold, or are undergoing a longer procedure, sedation can make your visit far more relaxed. Sedation also helps minimize discomfort and allows our team to work efficiently while you remain peaceful and stress free.
At Finger Lakes Dental Care, we offer several sedation options tailored to your needs, including laughing gas, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. IV sedation is especially helpful for surgical procedures such as wisdom tooth removal and dental implant placement, providing a deeper level of relaxation. Our experienced team will discuss the best option for your treatment and ensure your safety and comfort every step of the way.

What is laughing gas, and what does it do?
Laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, is a mild sedative used to help you feel relaxed and at ease during dental treatment. It’s inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose and begins working within minutes. Laughing gas doesn’t put you to sleep—you remain awake and able to respond—but it reduces anxiety and creates a calm, comfortable feeling.
Once the procedure is finished, the effects wear off quickly as the gas is flushed out with oxygen, allowing most patients to resume normal activities right away. It’s a safe and effective option for both children and adults who feel nervous about dental visits.

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry can benefit anyone who feels anxious, fearful, or stressed about dental treatment. It’s especially helpful for patients with a strong gag reflex, low pain tolerance, or difficulty sitting still for long appointments. Sedation is also ideal for those needing complex or multiple procedures in a single visit, making the experience more comfortable and manageable.
Children, individuals with special needs, and patients who have had traumatic dental experiences in the past may also find sedation helpful. Your dentist will review your medical history and treatment needs to determine which type of sedation is safest and most effective for you.

How long does the effects of dental sedation last?
The duration of dental sedation effects depends on the type of sedation used. Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) wears off within minutes after the mask is removed, allowing most patients to return to normal activities right away. Oral sedation and IV sedation have longer-lasting effects—typically a few hours—so you may feel drowsy afterward and will need someone to drive you home.
