In this video, Dr. Jason explains what sleep apnea is and the seriousness of it when left untreated.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing throughout the sleep cycle. The soft tissues in your mouth and tongue collapse and fall back into the airways. This results in not enough oxygen entering into the lungs, which causes an automatic reflex where you stop breathing.
Often called the “silent killer,” sleep apnea literally takes years off your life if untreated! Those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea are literally suffocating all night. Do not take snoring and sleep interruptions lightly. If you are living with someone that isn’t getting enough sleep due to persistent snoring and pauses in breathing, help them understand how serious it is.
Talk to your doctor to find out if you or a loved one are at risk and get diagnosed. Once you are diagnosed, you have options for treatment. The CPAP machine is the golden standard, however if you are unable to tolerate or be compliant with this form of treatment, there are other options like oral appliance therapy. This kind of treatment is available through your dentist with a custom mandibular repositioning appliance.
